King's Point's Genuine Risk has won the prestigious Pineapple Cup for best performance by a monohull boat in the 50th Anniversary of one of the world's classic yacht races.

Day 4 Update from Genuine Risk

68 Miles to go to Montego Bay, and Rambler is in sight! Pretty exciting for
the crew to pull back the 65 mile lead they had on us a few days ago.
Staying deep around the tip of Cuba and heading south has brought us much
better breeze than we expected, though some grey clouds in the area have us
worried. Making 10 knots to the west now with the A2 spinnaker up, and
looking forward to finishing soon.

Another Starry Night Aboard Genuine Risk Enroute to Montego Bay

After a day of light air beating we are now back up to 13-14 knots of
boatspeed in an 11 knot SE'ly breeze. We'll be passing between San Salvador
and Rum Cay soon, with 260 miles to go till the turn at Cuba. Freeze dried
teryaki chicken for dinner hit the spot. Some of the folks on board include
Kings Pointer's Jared Reeves '12 who is between sea year ships and flew to
Florida from an ore carrier on the Great Lakes, Brian Giorgio '08 a 2nd
Engineer with MEBA, Jeff Miller '04 a 1st Engineer with MEBA, Ralf Steitz
USMMA Sailing Foundation President, and CDR Chris Gasiorek '95 USMMA Sailing

Day 2 Update from Genuine Risk

Yesterday's fast reaching has changed to light beating heading east off of
Eleuthera Island. Windspeed 6-10, boatspeed 10-11. A few hours of rain
this morning, but and otherwise clear and starry night. Beau Geste is about
a half mile to leeward of us, and Rambler quite a ways ahead. Looking for a
shift to take us south toward Cuba. Follow the race at

Update from Genuine Risk in Montego Bay Race

Just rounding the top of Great Isaac Shoal, entering the Northwest
Providence Channel. Had a great reach across the Gulf Stream, with wind
speeds from 12-16 at 85 degree wind angle and boatspeeds from 15-17. We
were neck and neck with Beau Geste for a while, but in the heavier air
reaching she has some speed on us- hope to make some distance back on her
and Rambler 100 in the forecasted lighter wind ahead. 60 miles down in 4
hours- 751 to go!

KP at the South Pole

Just received the following email and photos from the ADM Mark Buzby, KP'79 and currently CO of Military Sealift Command- Always great to see the KP Burgee flying proud!

Just back from my travels to Antarctica to check on MSC piece of Operation DEEP FREEZE resupply mission. While there, I had the opportunity to visit the US base at the South Pole - Amundsen-Scott Station, and could not resist hoisting the KP pennant there. This is actually the pennant off JERRY LAND flown proudly for many years.
Believe this is the first time the KP pennant has ever travelled there, and certainly at the lowest temperature it has ever flown (-10 deg F with -43 deg windchill!).
Being a well-trained Mariner, I did not trust the scientist's position of the geographic Pole, and instead verified the true posit with my handheld GPS. Good fix.

Vanquish to Race 2011 Trans-Atlantic Race Crewed by Youth All American Offshore Team

Vanquish at the start of last year's Newport to Bermuda Race

Several Kings Pointer's will get the opportunity this summer to compete in a race from Newport, RI, to England as part of the newly formed All American Offshore Team. The team was formed this year as a partnership between the USMMA Sailing Foundation, Storm Trysail Club, and the Oakcliff Sailing Center to promote and support youth offshore sailing in the US. The Front Fell Off- or more acurately, was delicately removed!

I'm sure many of you have seen the classic comedy sketch regarding the ship where "the front fell off." Here is the T/V Liberator at Boothbay Harbor Shipyard with the stem removed, which is being replaced due to rot. The job is progressing well, with the only complaint from the shipyard staff that she is built too well....and very tough to disassemble. Fortunately that will be over soon, and the re-assembly can start. More Pics Here.

70 Year Old Monomoy Referbishment

The Kings Point Monomoys have made it through 70 years of hard- pretty good for a boat that was likely designed to last long enough to train WWII Merchant Mariners. New fiberglass versions are on their war this winter, but we decided to give one of the old ones a makeover. The wood is in great shape, and once the paint was removed the scent of cedar from the planking filled the boat bay!
